Fragrances and harsh chemicals in regular detergents can irritate sensitive, acne-prone skin. Opt for dermatologist-recommended brands labeled “free & clear” or “non-comedogenic.”
Oil, sweat, and bacteria build up quickly, especially if you sleep on your side or stomach. Aim to wash pillowcases every 2–3 days and bed sheets weekly using hot water and a gentle, skin-safe detergent.
These often leave a waxy coating on fabric that clogs pores and traps bacteria. If needed, switch to wool dryer balls as a natural alternative.
Re-wearing sweaty or tight-fitting clothes, especially after workouts, can lead to acne mechanica (friction + bacteria). Wash immediately after use or rinse in hot water if you can’t machine wash right away.
Add ½ to 1 cup of distilled white vinegar to your rinse cycle to help kill bacteria, neutralize detergent residue, and soften fabrics naturally without irritating the skin.
Reusing towels spreads acne-causing bacteria and oils. Use a fresh towel for your face and body every day, or at least every other day.
Towels and underwear harbor bacteria and oil. Wash in hot water (60°C or 140°F) when possible, and dry thoroughly in the sun or a high-heat dryer.
Clothes need space to move around so they’re thoroughly cleaned and rinsed. Overloading traps soap and dirt in the fabric, which can then irritate skin.
Run an empty hot wash with white vinegar or washing machine cleaner to kill mold, bacteria, and detergent residue, especially if you wash with cold water often.
For clothes that sit close to your skin (like bras, undershirts, or activewear), stick to cotton or sweat-wicking materials that breathe. Avoid tight synthetics that trap sweat and oil.
